Useful Information About Tenerife

Hiking in Tenerife

Come and enjoy the splendid walking trails which Tenerife has to offer. You will be rewarded with a beautiful landscape, which is crisscrossed with hiking trails of various difficulty levels. Tenerife has multiple micro-climatic zones, a wide range of landscapes, villages and towns which have been around since the times of the Guanches (the islands original inhabitants) and a truly amazing gastronomy. All this makes for a diverse and exciting experience when visiting Tenerife and it will ensure you will be back for a second visit!

The first "hiking" routes as we know them today were created by the indigenous people of the island and were Shepherd paths which the Guanches used for herding their goats which were their main food source. Also, the paths were important trade routes between the "Menceynaten", small kingdoms, of which there were seven in Tenerife.

The "high point" for hikers coming to Tenerife is the ascent of the highest mountain in Spain - Mount Teide, which stands at 3,718 meters (12,198ft) high! Despite this height, no mountaineering equipment is required. For the challenging yet rewarding climb to the summit, a special permit is required, however. Our team can help you find information about this. From the starting point of the ascent, the area of Montaña Blanca is at 2,725 meters, very near the visitors centre El Portillo. The best way to "Do Teide" is to set off at around 3pm from Montaña Blanca and stay over night in the Altavista Refuge which is located at the same height as the cable car station. Then to experience something magical - climb to the sumit before sunrise and witness the sun rising above the horizon. Detailed information about the hiking trails in the Teide National Park are available in the two visitor centres. Or you can ask a member of our team about the excursions we have on offer.

More hiking trails are located in the other Tenerife National Parks of Anagagebirges and Tenomasivs. The partly endemic flora and fauna changes all over the island depending on the landscape and different climate zones. So whatever your level of expertise, you can be rest assured Tenerife has something unique to offer to all hikers!
